sleep problems and insomnia
![]() According to the office for National statistics, one third of the population suffers from a sleep problem at any one time.
Insomnia can involve trouble falling asleep (i.e. longer than 30-40 minutes); sleeping lightly and restlessly and waking often; and also waking early and being unable to get back to sleep. Although it is not life-threatening, it can be extremely distressing, exhausting and depressing. Often you build up an expectation of not sleeping, which helps to maintain the problem, as a belief that something will happen can make it happen. This lack of sleep can lead to tiredness during the day, headaches, lack of concentration and irritability. Sleeping pills do not treat the cause of the insomnia, are addictive and not appropriate for long-term use as their affect soon reduces as the body gets used to the drug. |
